The Department was
established in 1983 as Cytopathology Division under
Dr.N.Sreedevi Amma. In the initial formative years,
the focus was on diagnostic cytopathology and cervical
cytology screening programmes. Surgical Pathology and
Haematopathology were started in 1984. |

We have 4 sections– Surgical pathology,
Cytopathology, Haematopathology and Molecular pathology.
Accredited Laboratory of Indian Academy of
Cytology(IAC) for cytology screening, reporting and training.
Examination centre for National cytotechnology and cytotechnician
examination conducted by IAC.
Immunophenotyping was introduced in 1996. Flow cytometry
immunotyping for Leukemias and other lymphoproliferative disorders
was introduced in 2004.
Frozen section diagnostic expertise is also available in
the department.
Molecular lab started functioning in November
2005. We are studying the role of Human papilloma virus types
16 & 18 in different cancers (oral cavity, cervix, oesophagus
& lung) from Natural background radiation areas of Kerala.
Telepathology facility was established in
2004. Teleconsultation services are provided to Early Cancer
Detection Centers of RCC.
Teaching

WHO sponsored Trainer Trainee programmes in Cytology for
Cytologists and Cytotechnologists from developing countries.
